Bronze Relief, by Ternouth, for the Nelson Monument, Trafalgar-Square... 1850. Creator: Unknown
Bronze Relief, by Ternouth, for the Nelson Monument, Trafalgar-Square - the Bombardment of Copenhagen, 1850. The Bombardment of Copenhagen is the incident in the life of the great Admiral forming the subject of the bas-relief just placed on the pedestal of the Nelson Column, on the panel facing the Strand...Nelson is sealing his despatch to send by the flag of truce. Nelson is standing in the middle of the group pressing the seal on the letter, which the bearer of the flag is resting on a gun...on the whole, it is not so effective and masterly as the two other bas-reliefs. There is a certain air of stiffness throughout the whole, and of the two groups at the lower corners from each having two figures, the effect is bad...they appear more as if the two parties had been fighting on their own account...conveying the idea of a pugilistic encounter, rather than that of a great battle'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This bronze relief, titled 'The Bombardment of Copenhagen,' is a significant historical artwork created by Ternouth for the Nelson Monument in Trafalgar Square, London, in 1850. The intricately detailed bas-relief depicts a pivotal moment in the life of Admiral Horatio Nelson, a British naval hero who famously defeated the Danish and French fleets in the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. The scene captured in the relief shows Nelson in the center, sealing a despatch to be sent by the flag of truce. Surrounding him are various naval officers and sailors, engaged in the process of preparing the document for delivery. The relief is located on the panel facing the Strand side of the monument's pedestal. However, despite the historical significance of the subject matter, the relief has been criticized for its lack of dynamism and mastery compared to the other bas-reliefs on the monument. Some critics argue that the figures in the relief appear stiff and lack the energy and movement that would be expected in a depiction of a great battle. Additionally, the two groups of figures at the lower corners, each consisting of two figures, have been criticized for their poor composition. Instead of conveying the grandeur and intensity of the Battle of Copenhagen, they appear more like parties engaged in a pugilistic encounter. Overall, while the 'Bombardment of Copenhagen' relief is an important historical artifact, its execution leaves room for improvement in terms of artistic mastery and effectiveness.
