EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Batman Treating with the Blacks, 1835" captures a significant moment in Australian history. Created by Julian Ashton in 1886, this wood engraving depicts John Batman, an influential figure known for his role in founding the city of Melbourne. In 1835, Batman signed a treaty with members of Dutigalla, a band of the Wurundjeri tribe from Port Phillip. This agreement marked an attempt at negotiation and understanding between European settlers and Aboriginal people during the 19th century. The black and white composition adds depth to the image, emphasizing the historical context and capturing the seriousness of these negotiations. The monochrome aesthetic also highlights the contrast between cultures and serves as a reminder of Australia's complex colonial past. Julian Ashton's skillful engraving brings this pivotal moment to life, showcasing his talent as an artist. Collaborating with Andrew Garran and Frederic B Schell for Picturesque Atlas Publishing Co. , Ashton successfully illustrates this important event in Australian history. This print is not just a visual representation but also serves as a valuable historical artifact. It reminds us of our shared heritage while prompting reflection on issues such as colonization, indigenous rights, and cultural exchange that continue to shape modern-day Australia.
