EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored engraving on laid paper, titled "The Bald Eagle (Falco leucocephalus)" by Johann Michael Seligmann, dates back to the 18th century. The Bald Eagle, a powerful bird of prey and the national symbol of the United States, is depicted with its wings spread wide, poised above the water's surface with a fish in its talons. Seligmann, a German artist, created this masterpiece between the years 1743 and 1762. The eagle's intricate plumage is beautifully rendered, from the white head and tail to the golden brown body and wings. The engraving bears the Catesby mark, named after the English naturalist Mark Catesby, who sponsored the creation of the series of which this print is a part. The series, known as "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands," was one of the most comprehensive works on the natural history of the Americas at the time. This artwork is a testament to the scientific curiosity and artistic skill of the 18th century. The Bald Eagle, a symbol of freedom and strength, is presented in all its majesty, with its keen eyes focused intently on its prey. The etching is further enhanced by the delicate hand-coloring, adding depth and vibrancy to the image. This rare and valuable print is now part of the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., where it is preserved for future generations to appreciate the beauty and wonder of the natural world as depicted by the skilled hand of Johann Michael Seligmann.
