EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Ark Royal" by artist Charles Henry Bourne Quennell. The image depicts the English galleon, which was originally commissioned for Sir Walter Raleigh in 1587 but later purchased by the crown to serve in the Tudor navy. As a flagship vessel, it played a crucial role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada and became an iconic symbol of English naval power. The illustration is taken from "A History of Everyday Things in England" a comprehensive two-part book written by Marjorie and C. D. B. Quennell, published in 1931. This particular artwork belongs to the second part covering the period between 1500-1799. With its intricate details and monochrome aesthetic, this print transports us back to both the sixteenth century when The Ark Royal sailed proudly across turbulent waters, as well as to London during the thirties when this artwork was created. It serves as a testament to England's rich maritime history and its significant contributions to naval warfare. "The Ark Royal" continues to inspire even today, with subsequent warships of the Royal Navy being named in honor of this legendary vessel. This remarkable piece captures not only historical significance but also embodies artistic excellence through Charles Henry Bourne Quennell's masterful depiction of this majestic sailing ship.
