Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, 9th century (18th century). Artist: George Vertue

Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, 9th century (18th century). After coming to the throne in 871, much of Alfreds (849-899) reign was taken up with the struggle against the Danish invaders. After Alfred defeated them at Edington, Wiltshire, in 878, England was divided in half, with the south-western part in the hands of the Saxons, and the north-eastern portion, the Danelaw, administered by the Danes. War broke out again in the 890s, but by 897 the Danes had been defeated

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the regal presence of Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, during the 9th century. Created by artist George Vertue in the 18th century, this engraving beautifully portrays a man who played a pivotal role in shaping England's history. Alfred's reign was marked by relentless struggles against Danish invaders. After his decisive victory at Edington, Wiltshire in 878, England found itself divided into two parts: the south-western region under Saxon control and the north-eastern portion known as Danelaw, administered by the Danes. However, peace did not last long as war erupted again in the 890s. Despite these challenges, Alfred proved himself to be an exceptional leader and warrior. His determination and strategic prowess led to ultimate triumph over the Danish forces by 897. This portrait showcases his strength and resilience through his confident gaze and majestic attire. Wearing a crown atop his head and adorned with ermine fur on his cloak collar, Alfred exudes authority fit for a monarch. The intricate details captured by Vertue emphasize both Alfred's royal status and his connection to British heritage. As we admire this historic image from Heritage Images' Historica Graphica Collection, we are reminded of King Alfred's significant contributions to English history – from defending Wessex against invaders to laying foundations for future unity within England.
