Formerly an aircraft dock, this huge building... Goodyear Aircraft Corp. Akron, Ohio, 1941. Creator: Alfred T Palmer
Formerly an aircraft dock, this huge building -- thought to be the largest in the world with no interior supports -- is now the scene of many busy shops turning out aircraft sub-assembly parts, Goodyear Aircraft Corp. Akron, Ohio. Either new housing close to the plant or vastly improved public transportation will eventually have to be supplied, for the tires on the cars of the workers, and perhaps even the cars themselves, will in many instances give in before the end of the present emergency

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the transformation of a massive aircraft dock into a bustling hub of activity. Taken in 1941 by Alfred T Palmer, it showcases the Goodyear Aircraft Corp. plant in Akron, Ohio during the Second World War. Once an expansive structure with no interior supports and believed to be the largest of its kind worldwide, this building now houses numerous busy shops dedicated to producing aircraft sub-assembly parts. The image not only highlights the industrial prowess of America during this era but also hints at the challenges faced by workers commuting to this facility. The caption suggests that either new housing near the plant or improved public transportation will need to be provided as many workers' cars suffer from worn-out tires or even complete breakdowns due to their extensive use during wartime. With an American flag proudly waving above one entrance and rows of parked cars filling up a vast car park, this photograph encapsulates both national pride and everyday life on the home front. It serves as a testament to Goodyear's contribution to aircraft manufacturing and reflects how essential industries adapted their facilities for war production. Preserved within the Library of Congress archives, this historic image offers us a glimpse into an important chapter in American history – when industry played a crucial role in supporting national defense efforts while simultaneously shaping local communities.
