Abraham Welcoming the Three Angels, 1750s. Creator: Francesco Guardi (Italian, 1712-1793)
Abraham Welcoming the Three Angels, 1750s. This series of paintings predominantly tells the Old Testament story of Abraham and Isaac, and each of the canvases treats the interaction of humans and angels. In three works, angels appear to Abraham and, in one particularly dramatic canvas, an angel intercepts Abraham before he sacrifices his own son. However, the narrative of Tobias and the Angel comes from an entirely different book of the Bible. The blind Tobit sends his son Tobias off to collect a sum of money in the distant town of Media, with the angel Raphael accompanying him in disguise as a human. This particular work depicts Raphael overseeing Tobias catching a fish, which would later be used to cure his fathers blindness. Though the depiction the stories seems incongruous, the Sacrifice of Isaac and Tobias and the Angels were popular in Italian art between the 1400s and 1600s and both treat fathers and sons as well as obedience inspired by faith

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Francesco Guardi's masterpiece, "Abraham Welcoming the Three Angels" created in the 1750s. The series of paintings revolves around the biblical tale of Abraham and Isaac, emphasizing the profound interactions between humans and celestial beings. In these canvases, angels manifest themselves to Abraham, with one particularly striking image capturing an angel's intervention just before Abraham sacrifices his own son. However, amidst this narrative lies a contrasting story from another biblical book - Tobias and the Angel. Here, we witness Tobit, who is blind, sending his son Tobias on a journey to collect money in a distant town called Media. Accompanying him incognito as a human is Raphael, an angel tasked with guiding Tobias safely. This specific artwork portrays Raphael overseeing Tobias as he catches a fish that will later be used to restore his father's sight. Although seemingly incongruous at first glance, both stories hold immense popularity within Italian art from the 1400s to 1600s. They explore themes of paternal love and obedience inspired by unwavering faith. Preserved through time by Heritage Art/Heritage Images' meticulous printing technique, this print allows us to appreciate Guardi's skillful portrayal of these ancient tales while immersing ourselves in their timeless significance for generations past and present.
