Greetings Card : Flaming Star Nebula
Cards from Science Photo Library
Flaming Star Nebula
Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405), an emission nebula illuminated by the bright star AE Aurigae. An emission nebula (HII region) is a cloud of gas and dust which glows as its hydrogen gas is ionised by radiation from a hot star embedded in it. In most cases an emission nebula is lit up by a star created in it, but AE Aurigae is merely moving through IC 405, lighting it as it does so. Some of the gas is not ionised, appearing mauve as it reflects the stars light (a reflection nebula). IC 405 lies around 1600 light years from Earth in the constellation Auriga

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405), a celestial wonder located in the constellation Auriga, approximately 1600 light years away from Earth. The Flaming Star Nebula is an emission nebula, also known as an HII region, composed of gas and dust that glows due to ionization caused by radiation emitted from a brilliant star called AE Aurigae. Unlike most emission nebulae that are illuminated by stars formed within them, IC 405 is uniquely lit up by AE Aurigae as it passes through this cosmic cloud. The hydrogen gas within the nebula becomes ionized under the influence of AE Aurigae's intense radiation, creating a stunning display of vibrant colors and intricate patterns. In this remarkable image, we can observe how some parts of the gas remain un-ionized and appear mauve in color as they reflect the star's radiant light. This phenomenon gives rise to what is known as a reflection nebula within IC 405. The photograph not only captures the ethereal beauty of this interstellar spectacle but also serves as a testament to our ongoing exploration and understanding of our vast universe. It invites us to contemplate the awe-inspiring processes involved in stellar formation and evolution while reminding us of humanity's insatiable curiosity about space and its mysteries.
