False col. SEM of crocidolite fibres

False-colour scanning electron micrograph of fibres of blue asbestos, or crocidolite. All asbestos varieties are silicates (amphibole minerals), the most common being crocidolite, amosite and chrysotile. Asbestos fibres can be compressed, felted or woven to make insulating boards, paper & shingles. It is widely used in the construction industry because of its fireproof and insulating properties, while its resistance to corrosion makes it attractive to the chemical and process industries. If the smaller fibres are inhaled in quantity they lodge in the lung causing the respiratory disease asbestosis. Magnification: x60 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour scanning electron micrograph of crocidolite fibres, also known as blue asbestos. Asbestos, including varieties like crocidolite, amosite, and chrysotile, is composed of silicate minerals called amphiboles. Renowned for its fireproof and insulating properties, asbestos finds extensive use in the construction industry while also attracting the chemical and process industries due to its resistance to corrosion. The intricate image reveals compressed, felted or woven asbestos fibres that are commonly employed in creating insulating boards, paper, and shingles. However, caution must be exercised as inhaling significant quantities of these smaller fibres can lead to severe respiratory diseases such as asbestosis. Magnified at 60 times with a size of 6x7cm, this scanning electron micrograph highlights the beauty within the microscopic world. The vibrant blue hues emphasize the compound's presence while reminding us of its potential dangers when mishandled or released into our environment. As we admire this visually stunning photograph from Science Photo Library's collection on chemistry and pollution subjects, let it serve as a reminder of both the remarkable properties possessed by compounds like asbestos and their potential impact on human health if not handled responsibly.
