1. Title: "White Mullein and Hoary Mullein: A Botanical Duo from the Herbal Works of Nicholas Culpeper" This exquisite handcolored botanical copperplate engraving, taken from Joshua Hamilton's expanded edition of Nicholas Culpeper's "Culpeper's English Family Physician; or Medical Herbal," showcases two fascinating members of the mullein family: White Mullein, Verbascum thapsus, and Hoary Mullein, Verbascum lychnitis. The White Mullein, depicted on the left, is characterized by its tall, erect stalk, which can grow up to 6 feet high, and its velvety, oval leaves. The plant is covered in soft, white hairs, giving it a fuzzy appearance. The inflorescence is a large, terminal, conical spike of yellow flowers. White Mullein has a long history of medicinal use, particularly for soothing irritated mucous membranes and alleviating coughs. On the right, Hoary Mullein, or Hoary Aconitifolia, is distinguished by its silvery-white, felted leaves and taller, more slender stalk. Its inflorescence is a dense, terminal, spike of yellow flowers. Hoary Mullein was used in traditional herbal medicine for various purposes, including as a demulcent, expectorant, and diuretic. This beautiful engraving, produced during the late 18th century, is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of botanical illustrations during this period. The meticulous hand-coloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, enhancing the viewer's appreciation for the unique characteristics of these plants. As we delve into the rich history of herbal medicine, this print serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding the natural world around us and the knowledge passed down through generations. The White Mullein and Hoary Mullein, with their striking appearances and medicinal properties, continue to captivate our curiosity and inspire further exploration in the realm of botany and herbalism.
