EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the determination and resilience of the suffragettes during the Suffrage Mud March N.U.W.S.S. demonstration on 9th February 1907. Led by Emmeline Pankhurst's predecessor as president of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Society (NUWSS), Millicent Fawcett, more than 3,000 women from over 40 suffrage organisations braved the rain, mud, and fog to march from Hyde Park Corner to Exeter Hall. This historic event became known as the 'mud march' due to the challenging weather conditions. Dressed in their best clothes and carrying banners, the suffragettes trudged through the muddy streets of London, undeterred in their quest for women's right to vote. The demonstration marked a significant moment in the suffrage movement, showcasing the growing support for women's suffrage and the willingness of women to endure hardships to make their voices heard. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the courage and perseverance of the suffragettes in their fight for women's rights and the pivotal role that the NUWSS played in shaping the future of British politics.
