Born in London, Waterlow began his career as a printer, eventually founding the Waterlow & Sons printing company. He later expanded his business interests into finance, becoming a successful financier and banker. In 1883, Waterlow was appointed as the Lord Mayor of London, an honor that recognized his significant contributions to the city. During his tenure, he continued to demonstrate his commitment to London's welfare, using his position to promote charitable causes and improve the city's infrastructure. One of Waterlow's most notable philanthropic endeavors was the donation of Waterlow Park in Highgate. The park, which opened in 1889, was a gift to the people of London, providing them with a much-needed green space in the heart of the city.
