Cards from Mary Evans Picture Library
DAN-AIR de Havilland Comet 4C G-APDN at Gatwick Airport
DAN-AIR de Havilland Comet 4C G-APDN at Gatwick Airport. DAN-AIR started life as Davies and Newman Airlines after the two founders. (this could well be the Comet 4C I flew from Gatwick to Venice on in 1972, to join the SS Nevasa for an educational Mediterranean cruise). Coincidentally I boarded Nevasas sister ship the SS Uganda at Port Stanley in December 1984 on Its penultimate trooping voyage before being scrapped. Date: circa 1970

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the sleek and elegant de Havilland Comet 4C, registration number G-APDN, of Dan-Air, parked gracefully at Gatwick Airport. Dan-Air, founded by Davies and Newman, began its aviation journey with this iconic aircraft type. The image transports us back to an era of romantic air travel, circa 1970. I have fond memories of boarding this very Comet 4C for a flight to Venice, where I was to join an educational Mediterranean cruise. The coincidental connection to Dan-Air deepens as I recall boarding Nevasa's sister ship, the SS Uganda, at Port Stanley in December 1984, on its penultimate trooping voyage before being scrapped. This photograph encapsulates the allure of aviation history, with its aeronautical model gracefully poised against the backdrop of the airport, ready for its next adventure. The Comet 4C, with its distinctive design and rich history, continues to captivate the hearts of aviation enthusiasts and transport us to a bygone era of flying.
