EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning diptych, created by the Flemish painter Hugo van der Goes (also known as Hugues de Gand) around 1482, depicts two significant moments from the biblical story of original sin. The left panel, titled "The Fall of Man," illustrates the moment when Adam and Eve succumb to the temptation of the serpent in the Garden of Eden. With a serene expression, Eve offers the apple to an equally tranquil Adam, who reaches out to accept it, oblivious to the sin they are about to commit. The serene scene belies the profound consequences of their actions, which will lead to humanity's expulsion from the Garden and the introduction of suffering and death into the world. The right panel, titled "The Lamentation," shows the emotional aftermath of original sin. Here, we see Mary, the mother of Jesus, cradling the lifeless body of her son, who has been taken down from the cross. The sorrowful figures of the Virgin Mary, St. John the Evangelist, and the Virgin Mary's sister, Mary Magdalene, gather around the crucified Christ, mourning his loss. The contrast between the innocence of the mother and child in the left panel and the grief-stricken figures in the right panel underscores the far-reaching impact of original sin on humanity. Hugo van der Goes was a prominent Flemish painter of the Late Gothic period, known for his innovative use of perspective and his ability to convey deep emotion in his works. This diptych, with its intricate details and powerful narrative, is a testament to his artistic mastery and his profound understanding of the human condition.
