Painted with tempera on wood and adorned with exquisite gilt ornaments, this piece measures an impressive overall size of 24 1/8 x 60 1/8 inches (613 x 1527 cm), with a painted surface area of approximately 19 5/8 x 56 inches (498 x1422 cm). The paintings, attributed to Biagio d'Antonio, an Italian Florentine artist active from around1472 until his death in1516, and Jacopo del Sellaio from Florence (1441-1493), depict a continuous narrative unfolding the story of Jason and the Argonauts. In the left panel, we witness Jason being charged by King Pelias to retrieve the coveted Golden Fleece. Mounted on his horse, he seeks guidance from Centaur Chiron as they ascend Mount Pelion together alongside Hercules and Orpheus.
