EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - George II at the Battle of Dettingen on 27 June 1743. The War of the Austrian Succession was raging, and British forces, along with their allies from Hanover and Hesse, faced off against a French army led by the duc de Noailles. In an unprecedented move, King George II himself commanded his troops on the field, marking the last time a British monarch personally led soldiers into battle. The image portrays King George II atop his horse, surrounded by his loyal cavalry. His determined expression and raised sword convey both strength and resolve as he gestures towards the enemy lines. Dressed in regal attire befitting a monarch at war, he stands out amidst the chaos of conflict. This historic moment is beautifully captured in this print from "British Battles on Land and Sea" by James Grant. Published around 1880 by Cassell Petter & Galpin in London, Paris & New York, it serves as a testament to both military prowess and royal leadership. As we gaze upon this remarkable scene frozen in time, we are reminded of the bravery exhibited by those who fought for their countries during this tumultuous period. It is through images like these that we can appreciate not only historical events but also honor those who played pivotal roles within them.
