Pollen grain of chickweed

Pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a pollen grain of the chickweed plant Stellaria media. The outer wall (exine) is decorated with ridges, blebs and spots. The circular region at centre is called the germinal furrow. It is from here that the pollen tube germinates when the grain lands on the stigma of the flower. The tube grows down through the stigma, to the ovary. The male nuclei pass down the tube, fertilize the ovules and a seed is formed. Magnification: x800 at 6x6cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a pollen grain from the chickweed plant, scientifically known as Stellaria media. Under the lens of a scanning electron microscope (SEM), we are granted an up-close view of this tiny reproductive marvel. The outer wall, referred to as exine, is adorned with an array of ridges, blebs, and spots that add to its visual allure. At the heart of this pollen grain lies a circular region called the germinal furrow. It is within this small area that the magic of reproduction begins. When this minuscule grain finds its way onto the stigma of a flower, it germinates into a delicate pollen tube. This tube grows downwards through the stigma and eventually reaches the ovary. Within this slender conduit, male nuclei travel down towards their destination – fertilizing ovules along their journey. Through this remarkable process, seeds are formed and new life takes root in nature's grand design. The magnification level applied to capture such exquisite detail is x800 at 6x6cm size - allowing us to appreciate every intricacy present in this botanical wonderland. This stunning image serves as both a testament to nature's complexity and an invitation for us to delve deeper into understanding these fascinating processes that underpin our natural world.
