Pollen of Chickweed flower

Pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of pollen grains of the chickweed flower Stellaria media (a self pollinating plant). Pollen is dispersed either by insect or wind. Once on the stigma of the plant the pollen grain swells, pushing out the concave surfaces seen here and grows a pollen tube. This grows down the style and into the ovaries at the base of the capsule, where it releases the sperm (gametes) for fertilization with the eggs (ova). The result is the production of seeds. Pollen is an human allergen implicated in attacks of both asthma and hayfever. Magnification:X 460 at 35mm size. Original is bw print b786/175

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the pollen grains from a chickweed flower, scientifically known as Stellaria media. These self-pollinating plants rely on either insects or wind to disperse their pollen. Once these tiny grains land on the stigma of the plant, they undergo a fascinating transformation. The grain swells, causing concave surfaces to protrude and eventually grows a pollen tube. The remarkable journey continues as this tube extends down the style and into the ovaries at the base of the capsule. It is within these ovaries that fertilization takes place, with sperm (gametes) released by the pollen combining with eggs (ova) to produce seeds. While essential for reproduction in plants, it's important to note that pollen can also have significant effects on humans. As an allergen, it has been implicated in triggering asthma attacks and hay fever symptoms. This microscopic view offers us a glimpse into both nature's reproductive process and its potential impact on our health. With a magnification level of X 460 at 35mm size, this black-and-white print captures every intricate detail of these vital particles. A stunning addition to any collection exploring botany, plant reproduction, allergies or even scientific curiosity itself – courtesy of Science Photo Library.
