Humpback whales exhaling
Humpback whales exhaling in calm waters off the Antarctic Peninsula. When a humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) exhales, air is released from the whales blowhole, the nostril on the top of its head. The humpback whale may reach a length of 15 metres and weigh up to 27 tonnes. It is known for the impressive leaps that it makes out of the water and for its long vocalisations, which are more elaborate than in any other known whale song. Humpback whales are found in the deep waters of the coastal regions of all the worlds oceans. They are one of the whale species most threatened with extinction

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the serene moment of humpback whales exhaling in the tranquil waters off the Antarctic Peninsula. The majestic humpback whale, scientifically known as Megaptera novaeangliae, releases a burst of air from its blowhole, located on top of its head. These magnificent creatures can grow up to an impressive length of 15 meters and weigh a staggering 27 tonnes. Renowned for their acrobatic leaps out of the water and enchanting vocalizations, humpback whales possess more elaborate songs than any other known whale species. Found in deep coastal regions across all oceans worldwide, these gentle giants are unfortunately among those most threatened with extinction. In this image, we witness a pair of humpback whales gracefully emerging from beneath the surface, creating vertical columns of vapor as they exhale. Their breath mingles with the surrounding sea and ice, forming a mesmerizing spray that adds to the ethereal atmosphere. As we admire this remarkable display captured by Science Photo Library's lens, let us reflect on our responsibility to protect these incredible marine mammals and ensure their survival for generations to come.
