The human embryo at four weeks of gestation
Embryo. A four week old human embryo. Its crown- rump length, from the vertex of the skull to the mid-point of the buttocks, is about 5-8mm. In the fourth week the embryo becomes recognisable as a mammal: limb buds are visible at centre and centre right and rudimentary eyes (dark upper centre) develop in the form of stalks. The umbilical cord is seen between the head and the tail of the embryo. Within the embryo buds of tissue emerge and will later develop into the lungs, pancreas, liver and gall-bladder. It is in this period that the embryo is at the greatest risk of birth defects caused by genetic or external factors

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible development of a human embryo at four weeks of gestation. At this early stage, the embryo measures about 5-8mm in crown-rump length, from the top of its skull to the midpoint of its buttocks. The image reveals significant milestones as the embryo begins to take on characteristics resembling those of a mammal. Limb buds are clearly visible at the center and center right, indicating the initial formation of arms and legs. Additionally, rudimentary eyes can be observed in dark stalk-like structures near the upper center region. The umbilical cord is also prominently displayed between the head and tail, serving as a vital connection for nourishment and oxygen supply. Within this tiny being, buds of tissue emerge that will eventually develop into essential organs such as lungs, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder. However, it is during this critical period that genetic or external factors pose potential risks for birth defects. This awe-inspiring photograph not only offers a glimpse into our earliest stages of life but also serves as a reminder of how delicate and intricate our journey towards existence truly is. It highlights both our vulnerability during embryonic development and our remarkable potential for growth and transformation.
