Chinchilla hair
Chinchilla hair. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of chinchilla hairs. Chinchillas, rodents in the family Chinchillidae, have the densest fur of any animal. Up to 70 hairs can grow from a single follicle, whereas in humans a follicle houses a single hair. The hair is also uniform, with few, if any, guard hairs, and at under 1 micrometre in diameter is approximately 500 times finer than human hair. Chinchillas are native to the Andes mountains of South America, but are kept as pets in countries worldwide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of chinchilla hair, captured through a colored scanning electron microscope (SEM). Chinchillas, belonging to the rodent family Chinchillidae, boast the densest fur among all animals. It is truly remarkable that up to 70 hairs can sprout from a single follicle, a stark contrast to humans who typically have one hair per follicle. What sets chinchilla hair apart is its uniformity and scarcity of guard hairs. Unlike other mammals, their fur consists mainly of fine shafts with minimal variation in thickness. In fact, these delicate strands measure less than 1 micrometer in diameter – an astonishing 500 times finer than human hair! Native to the awe-inspiring Andes mountains in South America, chinchillas are not only admired for their luxurious coats but also cherished as pets worldwide. This image allows us to appreciate the biological marvel that lies within each strand of their fur. The false-colored SEM magnification reveals every minute detail of these enchanting hairs. Through this lens into nature's wonders, we gain insight into zoology and biology while being captivated by the softness and density inherent in chinchilla fur. Science Photo Library presents this extraordinary photograph as a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic appreciation for our natural world – reminding us once again why it deserves our utmost admiration and protection.
