The Chimps at Southam Zoo up to their old tricks again as they help to mow the grass

The Chimps at Southam Zoo up to their old tricks again as they help to mow the grass. Bugsy (left) and Rosie took over when maintenance manager went down with the flu. Visitors watched as the playful pair went through their antics. Working the forward and reverse gears of the mowing machine was no problem, but cutting the grass in a straight line is still something they are yet to master. 9th August 1973

EDITORS COMMENTS
The mischievous Chimps at Southam Zoo are back to their old tricks, this time lending a helping hand in the most unexpected way - mowing the grass! Bugsy and Rosie, two playful chimpanzees, took charge of the task when the zoo's maintenance manager fell ill with the flu. Onlookers were treated to a spectacle as these cheeky primates showcased their antics while operating the mowing machine. Mastering forward and reverse gears seemed like child's play for these intelligent creatures. However, cutting the grass in a straight line proved to be quite a challenge that they have yet to conquer. As visitors watched in amusement, Bugsy and Rosie zigzagged across the lawn, leaving behind an amusingly uneven pattern. Captured on 9th August 1973 by our talented staff photographer during an era filled with humor and nature-loving adventures, this vintage print transports us back to simpler times. The image perfectly encapsulates both animals' natural instincts and their ability to bring joy through their playful nature. This snapshot showcases not only the incredible intelligence of apes but also highlights how even mundane tasks can become extraordinary when seen through their mischievous lens. It serves as a reminder of our connection with nature and brings forth smiles as we witness these delightful chimps engaging in gardening duties on that sunny summer day.
