EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving depicts Blanche de la Tour, the daughter of King Edward III of England, as she is depicted on her monument in the Chapel of St. Edward at Westminster Abbey. The image is part of the "Civil Costume of England from the Conquest to the Present Period" series, which was drawn by Charles Martin and etched by his brother Leopold Martin. The Martins were the sons of the renowned romantic artist and mezzotint engraver, John Martin. The series was published in London by Henry Bohn in 1842. The costumes in the series were meticulously drawn from various sources, including tapestries, monumental effigies, illuminated manuscripts, and portraits. The Martins' attention to detail is evident in this depiction of Blanche de la Tour, whose intricately designed gown and headdress are faithfully reproduced. Blanche de la Tour was born in 1344 and was the daughter of King Edward III and his second wife, Philippa of Hainault. She was an important figure in English history, serving as a regent during the minority of her nephew, Richard II, and later acting as a peacemaker between her brother, the Black Prince, and the French king, John II. She died in 1399 and was buried in the Chapel of St. Edward at Westminster Abbey. This engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and history of the late medieval period in England, as well as showcasing the exceptional artistic skills of the Martin brothers.
