Medieval illuminated manuscripts, (1898). Creator: Unknown

Medieval illuminated manuscripts, (1898). Figs 1-4: From the 14th century. Figs 5-13: With the single leaves and flowers from the 15th century...In the illumination of manuscripts the livelier forms of the ornament superseded slowly the round, surface-filling forms of the Romanesque style. The flowers were partly idealised, also some direct from nature, and Figs 8 and 13 give us an idea how both kinds of treatment were often combined, especially in the later Gothic time. Characteristically of this time is a deep shading, as well as the use of half tones, and the laying on of lights. Remarkable is the variety and splendour of the colours which represent the abundance and brightness of the flowers in the miniatures of the venerable manuscripts of that age. Plate 43 from " The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from the German of H. Dolmetsch. [B.T. Batford, London, 1898]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of medieval illuminated manuscripts, dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. The intricate details and vibrant colors depicted in these manuscripts are truly awe-inspiring. As the Romanesque style gradually gave way to livelier forms of ornamentation, we witness a shift towards more dynamic and three-dimensional designs. The manuscript illuminators skillfully combined idealized floral motifs with direct representations from nature, as exemplified by Figures 8 and 13. This blending of styles became particularly prevalent during the later Gothic period. Deep shading, half tones, and skillful use of light further enhance the richness of these illustrations. One cannot help but be struck by the abundance and brilliance of colors employed in these miniatures. They beautifully capture the vibrancy found in nature's own flowers, bringing life to each page within these venerable manuscripts. Plate 43 from "The Historic Styles of Ornament" provides us with a glimpse into this remarkable artistic era. Translated from German author H. Dolmetsch's work by B. T Batford in London (1898), it offers an invaluable insight into medieval artistry that continues to captivate audiences today. As we explore this lithograph reproduction courtesy of The Print Collector, we can appreciate not only its historical significance but also its enduring beauty as a testament to human creativity throughout time.
