Giuseppe Garibaldi, Italian patriot and soldier of the Risorgimento, (1893). Artist: W Holl

Giuseppe Garibaldi, Italian patriot and soldier of the Risorgimento, (1893). Garibaldi (1807-1882) was involved in the Young Italy movement and after a failed uprising in Piedmont in 1834 he fled first to France and from there to South America, where he learned techniques of guerrilla warfare. He returned to Italy in 1848 at the head of a band of Red Shirts, fighting against the Austrians and French in Italys wars of independence, during which he became a popular hero. In 1860 Garibaldi invaded Sicily at the head of a force of 1000 men, which had increased to 30, 000 by the time he captured Naples. He then handed the territory he had captured in southern Italy over to Victor Emmanuel II, declaring him king of a united Italy. An engraving from James Taylors The Age We Live In: A History of the Nineteenth Century, From the Peace of 1815 to the Present Time, William Mackenzie, (London, 1893)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Giuseppe Garibaldi, an influential Italian patriot and soldier of the Risorgimento. Created by artist W Holl in 1893, this portrait captures the essence of Garibaldi's revolutionary spirit and heroic stature. Garibaldi's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to the cause of Italian independence. After a failed uprising in Piedmont in 1834, he sought refuge first in France and then ventured to South America. It was there that he honed his skills in guerrilla warfare, which would later prove instrumental in Italy's wars of independence. In 1848, Garibaldi returned to Italy leading a band of Red Shirts, fighting against Austrian and French forces. His bravery on the battlefield quickly made him a beloved figure among the people, earning him widespread admiration as a national hero. One of his most remarkable feats occurred in 1860 when Garibaldi invaded Sicily with only 1,000 men. As word spread about his cause, thousands flocked to join him until his force swelled to an impressive 30,000 soldiers. Eventually capturing Naples, he selflessly handed over the territories he had conquered to Victor Emmanuel II while declaring him king of a united Italy. This engraving from James Taylor's "The Age We Live In: A History of the Nineteenth Century" serves as both a tribute to Garibaldi's indomitable spirit and an enduring symbol of Italian patriotism during this transformative period.
