EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of Byzantine architecture and sculpture, captured by Karl Schaupert in 1898. The image features a collection of architectural elements from various historical sites, each one telling its own unique story. Figures 1 and 3 present intricate capitals and lintel-decoration from Agia Theotokos at Constantinople, dating back to the late 9th century. Fig 2 displays a stunning capital from S. Vitale at Ravenna, while Fig 4 exhibits a chaptrel-cornice from the church of St. Nicolas at Myra. Moving forward in time, Fig 5 reveals a pilaster-capital from Agia Sofia at Constantinople. Fig 6 takes us to mid-12th century France with an enchanting door-frame on the abbey-church at St. Denis. The subsequent figures continue to showcase remarkable architectural details such as pillar-decorations (Figs 8-11), arch-borders (Figs 12-13), consoles (Fig14), and pillar-shaft decorations (Figs15-16) from churches across Europe. Finally, Figs19-22 display arch-consols, key-stone decorations, and friezes found in notable structures like St. Sebald in Nuremberg and the cathedral at Bamberg. This print is part of "The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated by H. Dolmetsch in London during that era. It serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Byzantine artistry and craftsmanship throughout history.
