Haloes, historical artwork

Haloes in the winter sky. Historical artwork of a spectacular display of haloes around the Sun over a snowy forest. Haloes are formed by the refraction of the Suns light inside tiny regular ice crystals in the atmosphere. The most common is a 22 degree halo around the Sun (inner circle), which often has two sundogs (or parhelia, white streaks) extending horizontally from its edge level with the Sun. Outside the 22 degree halo is a rarer 46 degree halo. At top is a circumzenithal arc. Those last two haloes are relatively rare, as the crystals that form them require very exact conditions in which to form. Artwork originally published in The Atmosphere by Camille Flammarion, in 1873

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork, titled "Haloes in the Winter Sky" takes us back to the enchanting winter of the 19th century. The image showcases a breathtaking display of haloes encircling the Sun above a serene snowy forest. These mesmerizing haloes are formed when sunlight passes through tiny ice crystals in the atmosphere, creating a stunning optical phenomenon. The most prominent halo is the 22-degree halo, depicted as an inner circle around the Sun. It is often accompanied by two sundogs or parhelia, represented as white streaks extending horizontally from its edge at Sun level. Beyond this common halo lies a rarer sight - a magnificent 46-degree halo that adds another layer of ethereal beauty to this scene. Atop it all graces a circumzenithal arc, completing this celestial masterpiece. Originally published in Camille Flammarion's renowned book "The Atmosphere" in 1873, this colored illustration captures not only the physical aspects but also evokes emotions and wonderment associated with witnessing such atmospheric marvels firsthand. Transport yourself back to an era where art met science and explore this exquisite piece that intertwines history, meteorology, and human fascination with nature's wonders. Let your imagination wander amidst these frozen landscapes as you admire how light dances through ice crystals to create these awe-inspiring haloes.
