Fox Glacier, New Zealand
View of the Fox Glacier in the Southern Alps on the South Island of New Zealand. The glacier is 13.5 km long and emanates from the ice fields and glaciers beneath Mt Tasman (3498m) and Mt Hst (3138m). It descends to some 300m above sea level. The picture shows the central portion of the glacier. Like neighbouring glaciers in the Southern Alps, the Fox Glacier has retreated several kilometres during the past 100 years, although there have also been brief advances. The glacier is named after Sir William Fox, a 19th century prime minister of New Zealand
