DNA by tunnelling microscope

False-colour scanning tunnelling micrograph (STM) of DNA. A sample of uncoated, double-stranded DNA was dissolved in a salt solution & deposited on graphite prior to being imaged in air by the STM. An STM image is formed by scanning a fine point just above the specimen surface & electronically recording the height of the point as it moves. This image is dominated by the range of yellow " peaks" running down the left side, which represents the ridges of the helices in a right- handed, double-stranded DNA molecule (a so- called DNA duplex). Magnification: x2, 000, 000 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of DNA, captured through the lens of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). The false-color micrograph reveals a mesmerizing display of red hues against a dark background, highlighting the complex structure and molecular composition of deoxyribonucleic acid. To create this stunning image, an uncoated sample of double-stranded DNA was dissolved in a salt solution and carefully deposited on graphite. The STM then scanned a fine point just above the specimen's surface, recording electronic data on its height as it moved along. The result is an astonishing visual representation dominated by vibrant yellow "peaks" cascading down the left side. These peaks represent the helices or twisted strands that form within right-handed DNA duplex molecules. It serves as a testament to nature's incredible design and genetic blueprint. With magnification at an astounding x2,000,000 and presented in a 6x7cm size format, this photograph allows us to marvel at the microscopic world that underpins life itself. Its striking colors and intricate details invite contemplation about our own existence and hereditary makeup. This image from Science Photo Library offers not only scientific insight into biochemistry but also sparks curiosity about genetics and molecular biology. It stands as both artistry in its own right and an invaluable tool for furthering our understanding of life's fundamental building blocks – DNA molecules.
