False-col TEM of a lymphocyte

False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a lymphocyte, a type of white blood cell involved in the bodys specific immune response. There are two main types of lymphocytes; T-cells and B-cells. T-cells (thymus-derived) give rise to a cell-mediated response, tracking down and destroying antigens directly (as cytotoxic or killer T-cells) or through summoning & directing the scavenging macrophages. B-cells (bone marrow derived) mount the humoral immune response through the secretion of antigen-specific antibodies. Magnification: x 5, 850 at 6x7cm size, x2, 600 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a lymphocyte, one of the remarkable white blood cells responsible for our body's specific immune response. Lymphocytes can be broadly classified into two main types: T-cells and B-cells. T-cells, derived from the thymus gland, play a crucial role in cell-mediated immunity by directly seeking out and eliminating antigens as cytotoxic or killer T-cells. They also summon and guide macrophages to devour harmful invaders. On the other hand, B-cells, originating from bone marrow, orchestrate the humoral immune response by producing antigen-specific antibodies. At an impressive magnification of x5,850 for 6x7cm size prints and x2,600 for 35mm size prints, this image reveals intricate details of these extraordinary cells that safeguard our health. The vibrant false colours used in this TEM add visual allure while highlighting various cellular structures within the lymphocyte. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this snapshot of human anatomy at its finest – showcasing the intricate workings of our immune system through cutting-edge technology. This awe-inspiring photograph serves as a testament to both scientific innovation and natural marvels found within our own bodies.
