EDITORS COMMENTS
RNLI Padstow Lifeboat No. 2 Edmund Harvey, accompanied by the majestic tug Helen Peele, stands proudly in this print captured in Padstow, Cornwall in 1901. The significance of this image lies in its association with the lifeboat's inauguration day, marking a momentous occasion for the community. Serving faithfully from 1901 to 1929, the lifeboat and her crew are adorned with cork life jackets as they prepare to embark on their noble mission of saving lives at sea. The scene is bustling with excitement as a crowd gathers on the jetty to witness this historic event. While some eagerly observe the new lifeboat, others take advantage of an opportunity to explore the impressive tug Helen Peele nearby. Adorned with vibrant signal flags fluttering from its rigging—a tradition known as being dressed overall—the tug adds an air of festivity and celebration to the atmosphere. Intriguing glimpses into daily life can be seen in the background; J. Hawkens Corn Store and Langford & Sons establishments provide a glimpse into local commerce during that era. Preserved through time by an unknown photographer, this remarkable photograph encapsulates not only a significant maritime rescue operation but also serves as a testament to human resilience and compassion when faced with perilous challenges at sea.
