EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph takes us back in time to the Great Western Tea Factory in Sri Lanka during the 1920s. The scene unfolds as tea leaves, freshly plucked from the lush green hills of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), are meticulously sorted and weighed. Tea picking was a labor-intensive process, with women and men working in the fields from early morning until dusk. The finest leaves were carefully handpicked, ensuring only the highest quality tea was produced. Once collected, the leaves were transported to the factory for processing. In this image, we see a group of workers diligently sorting the tea leaves, spreading them out in large baskets to examine each leaf for imperfections. The leaves are then weighed on a scale, with the weight recorded for future reference. This painstaking process ensured that only the best leaves were used in the production of premium teas. The Great Western Tea Factory, established in the late 19th century, was one of the pioneering tea factories in Sri Lanka. The country's favorable climate and rich soil made it an ideal location for tea cultivation, and the industry quickly grew, becoming a significant contributor to the economy. This historical photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the dedication and hard work that went into producing the finest teas from the beautiful hills of Sri Lanka. The tradition of meticulously sorting and weighing tea leaves continues to this day, ensuring that each cup of tea is of the highest quality.
