EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the intricate anatomy of the Comoro Black Flying Fox, scientifically known as Pteropus livingstonii. The image offers a unique perspective, with a view from above and the left side of two skull specimens, revealing their distinct features. The Comoro Black Flying Fox, also known as Livingstone's Flying Fox, is an endangered species native to the Comoro Islands off the east coast of Africa. These bats are part of the Chiroptera order, characterized by their ability to fly, and the Carnivora and Chiropteran suborder, Caniformia. Despite their name, they are primarily fruit-eating bats, with a diet consisting mainly of ripe fruit. Their skulls, displayed in this photograph, reveal several notable features. The dorsal view shows the large, flat, hard palate, which is an adaptation for crushing fruit. The lateral view reveals the elongated canines, which are present in both males and females, but are more pronounced in males for use in territorial disputes. The large, round eyes provide excellent vision, essential for navigating and foraging in the dark. The Comoro Black Flying Fox is a fascinating example of the diverse range of adaptations within the animal kingdom. Their unique combination of features, including their flying ability, fruit-eating diet, and distinct skull morphology, make them a captivating subject for study and conservation efforts.
