EDITORS COMMENTS
Wild lettuce, Lactuca virosa, is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph by Hanhart, based on the botanical illustration by David Blair from Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" published in London in 1880. The wild lettuce plant is native to Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean, and is characterized by its large, ragged, and deeply lobed leaves, which can grow up to 1 meter in length. The plant also produces tall stems with milky sap and yellowish-white flowers. Wild lettuce has a long history of medicinal use, dating back to ancient Greece and Rome, where it was used to treat various ailments including pain, insomnia, and anxiety. The plant contains lactucin and lactucopicrin, which are believed to have mild opiate-like properties, making it a popular herbal remedy for relieving muscle and joint pain, as well as for its sedative effects. The intricate details of the plant's leaves and flowers are beautifully captured in this lithograph, providing a glimpse into the botanical knowledge of the late 19th century. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true work of art. This print would make an excellent addition to any herb garden, apothecary, or natural history collection, and serves as a reminder of the rich history of medicinal plants and their use in traditional herbal medicine.
