EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored botanical copperplate engraving, taken from Joshua Hamilton's Culpeper's English Family Physician; or Medical Herbal, published in London in 1792 by W. Locke, showcases two wild lettuce varieties: Lesser Wild Lettuce (Lactuca serriola) and Great Wild Lettuce (Lactuca grandiflora). The intricate detail of the engraving highlights the unique characteristics of each plant. Lesser Wild Lettuce, depicted on the left, is a biennial herb with a deeply lobed rosette of leaves and a tall, branched inflorescence. The plant is covered in small, white or pink flowers, and its milky sap is characteristic of the Lactuca genus. This plant was traditionally used in herbal medicine for its analgesic, diuretic, and sedative properties. Great Wild Lettuce, on the right, is a perennial herb with large, lobed leaves and a tall, unbranched inflorescence. The plant bears large, white or pink flowers, and its milky sap is also present. Great Wild Lettuce was also used in herbal medicine for its analgesic, diuretic, and sedative properties, as well as for treating respiratory issues and fever. Botanical illustrations like this one were an essential part of the scientific and medical communities during the 18th and 19th centuries. They provided accurate records of plant species, facilitated the identification of medicinal plants, and contributed to the advancement of botany and herbal medicine. This particular engraving is a beautiful example of the high-quality work produced during this period, showcasing the intricacies of these two wild lettuce varieties.
