EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the LNER W1 10000 'Hush Hush' locomotive, built in 1929, making its way through a bustling railway yard. The 'Hush Hush' was one of the LNER's most advanced and powerful express passenger engines, known for its streamlined design and quiet operation. Its sleek curves and polished finish stood in stark contrast to the rough and ready surroundings of the yard, where other locomotives and trains were being serviced and prepared for their next journeys. The early 1930s setting of this image is evident in the period clothing and equipment of the railway workers, as well as the lack of modern signage and branding. The scene is one of industry and activity, with trains and engines of various shapes and sizes filling the frame. The 'Hush Hush' appears almost regal as it glides past, its steam plume billowing in the background. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when trains were the primary mode of long-distance travel and the railway was a hive of activity and innovation. The image is a testament to the rich history and heritage of the railway industry, and serves as a reminder of the role that these magnificent machines played in shaping our transport infrastructure and connecting communities across the country.
