EDITORS COMMENTS
Jonah, the Minor Prophet of the Old Testament, is depicted in this engraving from the "Sacred Bible" of Martin Luther, printed in Frankfurt in 1704. In the image, Jonah is shown sitting on a rocky beach, deep in thought, with the vast ocean stretching out behind him. The prophet, dressed in white, looks contemplative and introspective, his expression reflecting the profound nature of his divine calling. Jonah's story is one of obedience and redemption. According to the biblical account, God commanded Jonah to travel to the city of Nineveh and warn its inhabitants to repent of their wicked ways. However, Jonah attempted to evade this command by boarding a ship to Tarshish. When a great storm arose, the sailors on the ship threw Jonah overboard, believing him to be the cause of their troubles. Jonah was then swallowed by a whale, which later spat him back out onto dry land. After this miraculous event, Jonah finally obeyed God's command and went to Nineveh, where he delivered his message of repentance. This beautiful engraving captures the essence of Jonah's story, with the prophet's solitary figure contrasting against the vast expanse of the sea. The intricate details of the illustration, from the rippling waves to the textured rocks, add to the sense of depth and drama, making this a truly captivating work of art from the rich tradition of biblical illustration.
