EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken between 1910 and 1920 by Harris & Ewing, captures the statue of Commodore John Barry, the first flag officer in the United States Navy. The statue is located outside, likely on the grounds of the United States Capitol or in another prominent public space. John Barry (1745-1803) was a pivotal figure in the early history of the US Navy, having served as a naval officer during the American Revolutionary War. He was instrumental in organizing the Continental Navy and was later appointed as its first commodore. The statue, which stands tall and proud, is a testament to Barry's enduring legacy as a naval hero. The photograph was taken by Harris & Ewing, a prominent Washington, D.C. photographic studio founded by George W. Harris and Martha Ewing Kuntze in 1896. The studio, which was later taken over by Martha's daughter, Martha Ewing Newcombe and her husband, Guy Harris, produced numerous photographs of notable figures, events, and landmarks in the United States during the early 20th century. This image, with its clear composition and sharp detail, is a valuable addition to the Harris & Ewing Collection at the Library of Congress.
