This print captures a significant moment in the history of Hyde Park Turnpike, dating back to 1876. The image showcases the auction of the toll gate located between Piccadilly and Kensington, offering a glimpse into bustling city life in Victorian London. The creator of this remarkable piece remains unknown, adding an air of mystery to its historical significance. The scene is filled with activity as people from all walks of life gather around to witness the sale unfold. A male auctioneer stands at the center, passionately describing the toll gate's features and value to potential buyers. Onlookers eagerly watch, their faces reflecting curiosity and anticipation. The setting exudes an authentic 19th-century charm with its architectural details and busy streetscape. A lady can be seen nearby, perhaps representing one of the few females involved in such business affairs during that era.
