Rajah Odetnuraan of Benares, 1857. Creator: Unknown

Rajah Odetnuraan of Benares, 1857. The present Rajah of Benares has no political power whatever, and lives at Ramnuggur - a princely residence over the river, a short distance from Benares, which had previously been a fort, and the head-quarters of Cheit Sing. Travellers often speak of the magnificent hospitalities of Ramnuggur; and the Rajah has frequently attended the amateur theatrical performances at Secrole, which is the English station, two miles distant from Benares...At one of the Hindoo festivals it is the custom to shower a red powder on all the dresses; and at the parties given by the Rajah this process is used, among much merriment, to all the British guests in such a way as to recall the confectioneries thrown at Carnival time in Rome'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts Maharaja Iswari Prasad Narayan Singh, also known as Rajah Odetnuraan of Benares, in his regal attire, adorned with jewels and a jeweled headdress, during the mid-19th century in India. The Maharaja, who had no political power at the time, resided at Ramnuggur, a princely residence over the river from Benares. Ramnuggur was renowned for its magnificent hospitality, and the Maharaja was known to attend amateur theatrical performances at Secrole, the English station near Benares. During Hindu festivals, it was customary to shower red powder on all attire as a sign of respect and merriment. This tradition was extended to British guests at the Maharaja's parties, adding to the festive atmosphere. The Maharaja is shown here wearing a turban and holding a sword, symbolizing his royal status and power. This photograph was published in the Illustrated London News in 1857, providing a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Maharajas during the British Raj in India. Iswari Prasad Narayan Singh, also known as Maharajah Bahadur Sir Iswari Prasad Narayan Singh, was a significant figure during the British colonial rule in India.
