EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th-19th century enamel miniature painting depicts a humble peasant woman, her profile framed against the backdrop of a bucolic countryside. Dressed in the traditional attire of the era, she wears a simple, yet elegant, circular dress with a high waistline and a voluminous skirt. Her head is adorned with a headdress, consisting of a colorful headscarf and a conical base called a bassetaille, which was a common fashion among rural women during this period. The peasant woman holds a basket filled with freshly gathered eggs, symbolizing her role as a farm laborer and her connection to the land. The enamel technique used in this artwork, with its vibrant colors and intricate details, adds to the painting's charm and authenticity. The copper plate base gives the artwork an antique, timeless quality. This exquisite piece, created between 1790 and 1810, is a testament to the simple yet enduring beauty of rural life during the transition from the 18th to the 19th century. It is a poignant reminder of the hardworking men and women who played a vital role in agricultural production and the sustenance of communities. This enamel miniature painting is a hidden gem from the rich artistic heritage of France and is currently housed in the Musée Cognacq-Jay in Paris, one of the city's most esteemed museums.
