Leonhard Euler (1707-1783), Swiss mathematician, being rescued from a fire in 1771. Eulers house was burned down during the Great Fire of St Petersburg, Russia, and Euler had to be carried to safety by his Swiss servant, Peter Grimm. Euler was a professor at St Petersburg Academy at the time. Although he had become blind in 1766, but had a remarkable memory and was still a prolific mathematician. During his life, Euler developed the theory of differential equations, the calculus of variations, and did important work in astronomy and optics. He published 800 papers, contributing to all areas of pure and applied mathematics

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in the life of Leonhard Euler, the renowned Swiss mathematician. In 1771, tragedy struck when Euler's house was engulfed in flames during the Great Fire of St Petersburg, Russia. Despite being blind since 1766, Euler's brilliance and determination remained undeterred. As thick smoke billowed around him, he found himself relying on his remarkable memory to navigate through danger. In this historical artwork, we witness the heroic act of Peter Grimm, Euler's loyal Swiss servant who risked his own safety to carry his esteemed master to salvation. The image showcases their unbreakable bond as they emerge from the burning chaos together. Euler's contributions to mathematics are immeasurable; he developed groundbreaking theories in differential equations and calculus of variations while making significant strides in astronomy and optics. His legacy lives on through an astonishing publication record that boasts an astounding 800 papers spanning various mathematical disciplines. This colored illustration transports us back to the 18th century, offering a glimpse into both personal triumph over adversity and historical significance. It serves as a testament not only to Euler's resilience but also to human ingenuity and compassion. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, let us remember that even amidst darkness—both literal and metaphorical—the light of knowledge can guide us forward with unwavering determination.
