Lades Moon globe, 1899
Lades Moon globe. This Moon globe was constructed in around 1897 by the German astronomer Heinrich Eduard von Lade (1817-1904). It only shows the visible side of the Moon, as it would be another 60 years before the far side of the Moon would be mapped by US and Soviet spacecraft. The topographical side of this globe shows features exaggerated in height ten times. The other side of the globe is a conventional map with named features. This globe is part of the collection of German poet Rudolf Dietz

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Lades Moon globe, a remarkable creation by German astronomer Heinrich Eduard von Lade in 1897. As one of the earliest depictions of the Moon, this globe exclusively presents its visible side since it would take another six decades for the far side to be explored and mapped by US and Soviet spacecraft. The topographical aspect of this spherical model is particularly intriguing as it exaggerates features ten times their actual height. This artistic choice allows viewers to appreciate the lunar landscape with enhanced clarity and detail. On the other side, a conventional map reveals named geographical elements that add depth to our understanding of Earth's celestial neighbor. Once owned by German poet Rudolf Dietz, this antique moon globe now resides within a museum collection. Its historical significance lies not only in its age but also in being an invaluable tool for astronomers during a time when space exploration was still in its infancy. With mountains and craters meticulously depicted, this lunar sphere provides insight into selenology—the study of the Moon—and serves as a collector's item cherished by enthusiasts worldwide. The axial rotation mechanism on its stand further adds to its authenticity and charm. As we gaze upon this extraordinary artifact from over a century ago, we are reminded of humanity's enduring fascination with space exploration and our relentless pursuit to unravel the mysteries beyond our own planet.
