False-colour SEM of the crown wheel of a

False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the crown wheel of a Swiss-made, 17-jewel INCABLOC watch. The crown wheel is part of the watchs winding mechanism. When the watch is wound, the winding pinion (small gear wheel seen edge-on at bottom) rotates, meshing with the crown wheel. The rotation of the crown wheel causes the ratchet wheel at top left to turn, & this wheel is attached to the barrel which holds the mainspring of the watch. The mechanism is clean; the tiny dust particles would not affect its function. The absence of screwdriver marks in the crown wheels slot shows that the assembly has never been serviced. Magnification: x4 at 6x4.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour scanning electron micrograph of the intricate crown wheel from a Swiss-made, 17-jewel INCABLOC watch. As part of the watch's winding mechanism, the crown wheel plays a vital role in keeping time ticking smoothly. When the watch is wound, the small gear wheel known as the winding pinion elegantly rotates and meshes with this magnificent crown wheel. At first glance, one can appreciate the clean and flawless assembly of this mechanical wonder. The absence of any screwdriver marks within the slot of the crown wheel reveals that it has never been serviced before, highlighting its impeccable condition. The mesmerizing gears and cogs captured in this image are not just aesthetically pleasing but also serve an essential purpose. The rotation of this exquisite crown wheel sets off a chain reaction; it causes another cogwheel called the ratchet wheel to turn at top left. This ratchet wheel is connected to a barrel that houses the mainspring – an integral component responsible for powering this remarkable timekeeping device. While tiny dust particles may be present on these delicate mechanisms, they pose no threat to their seamless function. This photograph offers us an extraordinary glimpse into everyday objects we often take for granted – reminding us of both their complexity and beauty.
