Coloured SEM of bronchial epithelium lining lung

Lung lining. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the surface of the internal lining of the human lungs. Also known as bronchial epithelium, this lining helps to keep the lungs free of infection. Clumps of fine hairs, called cilia (green) are seen. These protrude from between the tops of specialised epithelial cells (red). Rhythmic movements of the cilia move bacteria & other particles away from the gas- exchanging parts of the lungs, towards the throat where they can be swallowed or coughed up. Magnification: x4800 at 7x6cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the bronchial epithelium, which lines the lungs and plays a crucial role in keeping them infection-free. The vibrant colors bring to life the surface of this internal lining, revealing its fascinating details under a scanning electron microscope. Highlighted in green are clumps of fine hairs known as cilia, which emerge from between specialized red epithelial cells. These cilia possess rhythmic movements that act as tiny brooms, sweeping bacteria and other particles away from the delicate gas-exchanging regions within our lungs. Instead, they guide these potential threats towards the throat where they can be safely swallowed or expelled through coughing. At a magnification of x4800, this image offers an awe-inspiring glimpse into one of our body's most vital systems - the respiratory system. It serves as a reminder of how intricately designed our anatomy is and how each component contributes to maintaining our health. This photograph not only captures scientific wonder but also holds educational value for those studying lung anatomy or interested in understanding how our bodies defend against infections. With its clarity and detail, it invites viewers to appreciate both the complexity and elegance found within us all.
