EDITORS COMMENTS
The Pergamon Altar, a magnificent masterpiece of Hellenistic art, was commissioned by Eumenes II Soter, the king of Pergamon in Asia Minor around 164-156 BC. Constructed from marble and limestone, this colossal altar was built to honor the gods and showcase the artistic prowess of the Pergamon school. The South Frieze of the altar depicts the epic battle between the gods and the giants, known as Gigantomachy. In this scene, an unidentified goddess is followed by Hephaistos, the god of fire and metalworking. He is depicted in high relief, raising a two-headed hammer aloft, symbolizing his power and strength. The next figure is an unidentified kneeling god, who thrusts a spear into the body of a fallen giant. The goddess Eos, the goddess of the dawn, rides sidesaddle into the fray, her horse rearing up in anticipation of the battle. She is armed with a torch, symbolizing the light of dawn and the beginning of a new day. Eos's presence in this scene is unusual, as she is typically depicted as a peaceful deity, but her role in the Gigantomachy highlights the dynamic and complex nature of Greek mythology. This stunning artwork, now housed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany, is a testament to the artistic achievements of the ancient world. The intricate details and lifelike figures on the Pergamon Altar continue to captivate and inspire viewers, transporting us back to the mythical age of gods and heroes.
