In this copperplate engraving by N.C. Goodnight, taken from Francis Grose's "Military Antiquities respecting a History of the English Army," published in London in 1812 by Stockdale, we are transported back in time to the Norman era. The image portrays a group of Norman soldiers, their determined expressions and postures conveying the intensity and focus of a military campaign. The soldiers are dressed in the armor of the time, a combination of chainmail and plate armor. The chainmail, a flexible and protective layer made of interlinked metal rings, covers their limbs and torso, while the plate armor, with its heavy, flat metal pieces, shields their chests and backs. Each soldier is equipped with a shield, a lance, and a halberd, their weapons of choice in battle. The shields, made of wood and covered with leather or metal, offer additional protection, while the lances and halberds serve as both offensive and defensive tools. In the background, military campaign tents can be seen, indicating that the soldiers are on the move. The presence of swords and helmets further underscores the preparations for battle.
