EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a mechanical bulk foam tender from Eltham Fire Station (E30) of the Greater London Council-London Fire Brigade (GLC-LFB) in the 1960s. The GLC-LFB was formed on 1 April 1965, and a series of photos was commissioned to document each type of fire engine that was either within or absorbed into the enlarged London Fire Brigade. The vehicle in the image is a Bedford fire engine, which came originally from the Middlesex Fire Brigade. With its bulk foam, own fire pump, and foam generator, this appliance was a valuable addition to the London Fire Brigade's fleet. The Middlesex Fire Brigade's stations were all absorbed into the London Fire Brigade in 1965. The foam tender is seen here at the fire station, ready for action. The mechanical bulk foam tender was an essential piece of equipment for fighting fires, particularly those involving flammable liquids. The foam generator on the appliance produced large quantities of foam, which could be used to smother the flames and prevent them from spreading. The image provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of the London Fire Brigade and the evolution of firefighting equipment. The 1960s were a period of significant change for the fire service, with the absorption of various smaller fire brigades into the London Fire Brigade. This photograph captures a moment in time when the new and the old came together to form a more effective and efficient firefighting force for the capital city.
