EDITORS COMMENTS
Step aboard this serene and idyllic ferry ride with Kitagawa Utamaro's stunning print, 'Ichi fuji ni taka san nasubi' (First dream: Fuji, hawks, and eggplants). Created between 1798 and 1801, this vibrant woodcut print transports us to a tranquil scene on the water's edge. A group of five women, four men, and a child gather on the boat as it glides across the river. Amidst the gentle lapping of the waves against the shore, one man expertly poling the vessel while another sits at the back with baskets overflowing with eggplants. As we gaze out towards Mount Fuji in the distance, our eyes are drawn to a majestic falcon perched on a man's forearm - perhaps part of a hunting party being ferried across? The soft colors and delicate lines evoke a sense of serenity and peace. This scene is not only an exquisite example of Utamaro's artistic skill but also invites us to step into its dreamlike world where life slows down and beauty reigns supreme.
