EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Queen Mary (Princess Mary of Teck), the beloved monarch of the United Kingdom from 1936 to 1952, seated gracefully on her ornate throne during her coronation ceremony on June 12, 1937. Queen Mary, who was born on May 26, 1867, in Kensington Palace, London, was the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Teck. She married the future King George V in 1893 and became Queen Consort upon his accession to the throne in 1910. The image shows Queen Mary, dressed in her magnificent coronation robes, adorned with precious jewels and holding the orb and scepter, exuding an aura of regal dignity and poise. The intricately designed throne, with its rich fabrics, gold accents, and ornate carvings, adds to the grandeur of the scene. This photograph, taken during Queen Mary's second coronation in 1937, was a significant moment in British history as it marked the formal recognition of Queen Mary's role as Queen Consort following the abdication of her eldest son, King Edward VIII, in 1936. The event took place at Westminster Abbey in London, in the presence of the Archbishop of Canterbury and other high-ranking dignitaries. Queen Mary's reign was marked by her dedication to public service, her support for various charities, and her role as the head of the Church of England. She continued to serve as a beloved figurehead and symbol of stability during World War II, and her passing on March 24, 1953, was deeply mourned by the British people. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of Queen Mary's significant contributions to British history and her enduring legacy as a revered monarch.
